If memory serves, that thread was about a TRactor motor, which uses a
different regulator and hence different troubleshooting techniques.

Given that description, and my experience with my Sports 6 (same or at least
similar generator and regulator), I'd say odds are very good that the cutout
contacts in the regulator are shot. The ignition light in effect monitors
the voltage across those contacts (when the ignition switch is on).
Double-check the regulator's connection to ground (E terminal), but my money
is on the cutout contacts.

As an initial check, connect a voltmeter from the D (output) terminal on the
generator to ground. Leave the wiring to the regulator connected. With the
engine off, the voltage will be zero. Start the engine and watch the
voltage as you rev the engine. If it goes above about 15v @ 3000 rpm, the
regulator is definitely suspect. (You can skip this step if the regulator
is easy to get to, but my Sports 6 has it in a bad spot.)

Working at the regulator, with the negative lead of your voltmeter securely
grounded and the engine at a fast idle, check the D terminal to ground and
then the B terminal to ground. If the D terminal is higher by more than 0.1
volts, the cutout is most definitely suspect. Double check the E terminal
to ground to be sure it's grounded and if so, replace the regulator.

I was able to coax mine back into operation by cleaning the cutout contacts
and bending them a little, but I'm certain it's not long for this world. A
new regulator is the cure.
