At $6.50/gallon, my guess is that SUV's aren't very prevalent in Europe.
The best thing people can do (in my mind anyway) is try to live closer to
where they work. I know that's not always possible, but when it is possible
it reduces car ownership costs which can help offset the potential increase
in housing, and it reduces the load on our overburdened and undermaintained
highway system. At $2-$3 per gallon, even if you can reduce a one-hour
commute by 10 minutes you'll save a fair amount of money, not to mention
reduce your stress level.
Ellen and I just bought a house which is about a 5-minute walk from my
current job (that wasn't a criterion for the purchase, just a nice
side-effect - I only live about 2.5 miles from work as it is), so I figure
I'll be able to rationalize all the joy rides in my TR250 (and my new Mini
Cooper S ;-) I want.
