TR2/3/4 Flywheels

Hopefully this isn't an over-discussed item but I just made an 
observation regarding TR2 and TR3 flywheels.

I just saw a photo of a TR2 flywheel and it weighed ~20#.  My TR3B 
flywheel was 30# and just plain solid.  Don't know what the TR4 flywheel 
looks like or weighs but is there some historical tidbit that explains 
why the big jump in weight.  The mass moment of inertia is probably not 
that far different (~20% more or so) since most of the extra material is 
toward the center which has less of an effect on the moment than the 
mass toward the perimeter.

My guess is that they wanted to make the later cars more driver friendly 
(low end torque for unsteady clutch feet).  Any other reasons for this 
change?
