At first blush, I think steering effort would be the same
as a TR7. I much prefer the feel of the road in a
TR7 as opposed to the power assisted steering of
the TR8. It is one of my few complaints about
the TR8.
I believe this question came up on the Wedge List
a while back and the consensus was that it wasn't
needed. Engine weights between 7 & 8's are about
the same, and the folks who have turned their 7's
into Rover V8 powered rockets sans power steering
seemed to indicate it isn't required.
FWIW, I am yanking mine off and keeping it off if and
when my steering rack seals start leaking.
