Hugh,
    I used one of those rubber round things that you use to remove jar
covers and, holding the bezel,  worked it back and forth until enough of the
black sealing stuff broke up and allowed the bezel to twist.  I also "worked
the tabs on the bezel to help loosen them before I did the above step.
    I found that the o rings TRF sells to go between the gauge and the dash
will replace the black stuff if you stretch them a little, place them on the
lens and put the bezel back and twist it shut.  I know one person who
recommended black silicone, but I don't think so...
