Dave,
I know what you are talking about and as it turns out the 1/2" movement is
the distance the clutch lever arm must travel before it contacts the clutch
throw-out bearing. This is normal. The slop you have allowing it to move
up and down may or may not be a problem. If it seems to pivot around a
single point this is also normal as this allows for slight misalignments
between the slave and the clutch arm lever during normal operation.
As far as the slight "play" you have with the clutch pedal, that is an
indication that you should bleed the system on the car, when you do that you
will see the "play" go away. (This is the same for brakes.)
When bleeding the clutch on the car be sure to keep fluid in the master
cylinder reservoir. I would also recommend getting a helper to operate the
pedal while you operate the bleeder port. If you have a vaccum bleeder for
your brakes you can use it on the clutch to help contain the fluid and make
it a one man job, you will still need to pump the pedal to bleed it with the
vaccum bleeder.
