Bob -

I rebuilt a TR4 OD and gearbox last fall. With time, patience, and a
couple of odd tools you can make yourself or ask a friend to make,
it's really not bad.

I've heard from more than one source that the Haynes manual is not
always the best source of information, as some printings contain
errors. The Bentley manual is believed to be a better source of
information, particularly for the very early cars.

One of the best sources of information I've found: Nelson Riedel's
guides to rebuilding the A-type overdrives and TR6 gearboxes:
http://www.buckeyetriumphs.org (look in the Technical section).
While the TR6 gearbox differs from the early TR gearboxes a little
bit, if you just keep in mind that you may have different clearances
and you don't try to put a synchro on first gear, the basic theories
apply.

Take the time to build a little gearbox stand like the one Nelson's
photos - it is well worth it, even if you don't add an electric motor
for testing.

Also, you can get the factory A-type OD service manual at
http://www.thelittlemacshop.com/trsite/download.html

Good luck!

Dan

1957 TR3, TS15098L 'O' - the body that was halved is now whole again!
New floors, new body rails, and solid patches where once there was
solid rust.
Fenders are back on, doors are back on, and it's coming home
Saturday. Now for the filler!

1977 Spitfire, FM64159U 'O' - in storage.
