I always understood that the sleeved type thermostat was a must on the TR 4 cyl engine to aid even an temperature across all four cylinders. The sleeve is supposed to shut off the bypass in the thermostat housing as the thermostat opens thereby creating better circulation of water to the rear most cylinder. The theory seems logical to me.
