A long time ago,I did that once. It didn't seem to come out any better, made
a little mess, beat my Feeler blade up( must have been a cheap feeler),and
to be quite honest,at the time I really didn't think it was the correct way
of doing it But I'll try just about anything once. I suppose what ever makes
one feel good about the task is best.

'tis true. back when the ink on my learner's permit was still wet and I was
under the tutelage of the wizen 'ole mechanic of the day, we only did valve
adjustments with the engine running. With the engine idling, and the lock
nut loose, you adjust the valve so you can just slip the feeler in and out.
It will grab the feeler as the valve opens and release it when the valve is
closed. Easiest is probably to close the gap until you can't move the feeler
at all, then open slowly until you can just pull it out. Might take a
little practice to be able to keep the screw driver in the adjuster slot,
just have to go with it and not fight it. Anyway, that's how I remember it,
I haven't done it in a long time. Come to think of it, my valves need
adjusting, I think I'll go ....
