Question: I have older 72 spoke wire wheels. Before I managed to count past 60,
I assumed they were 60 spoke 4 1/2" wheels, but now that they're 72 spokes I
wonder if they're also 5" wide. All the wheels have tires mounted and I don't
have a caliper to measure them. Are there stamped markings under the gunk that
would tell me? Did they even make 72 spoke 4 1/2" wheels?
I'm asking because when the [nice young lady] pulled out in front of me, on a
right on red, I stomped on the brakes and learned the sound of a stripped
splined hub extension. Didn't learn about bouncing wheels as the left rear hub
gave it up but didn't have time to completely unscrew the spinner. I hammered it
back on and pulled off the road into a dentist's parking lot -- he used to have
a Austin Healey 3000 it turns out. Anyway I monkeyed around with an aluminum can
shim before finally mounting the good spare and gently driving home (less than a
mile). So I'll need to buy at least one new matching wheel soon. TIA.
BTW I'd describe the sound as a blend of a wood planer and an air wrench.
