Hugh, I would try to find another complete prop shaft and rebuild that one.
You may also be able to purchase some cork and make a seal or try using
something from the plumbing department of the local hardware store with a
similar cross section to the cork you removed. It really only functions as a
dust seal so no pressure to deal with. Just make certain that it can move /
slide with a minimum of effort.
Most of all be certain that when you re-assemble the prop shaft that you
align the arrows so that the u-joints are in the proper phase with one
another. Otherwise your new u-joints will be toast in short order.
