Hi List & Brain S.!
Situation: 4 Yr. ago I restored my TR4/A IRS w/OD that took 2 yr to
complete [minus the engine rebuilt]. I dismantaled the main Gbx to
install an OD TR4/A Mainshaft, so as to install an 'A-Type' OD removed
from a TR3 tranny. I obtained the TR3/OD tranny back in '72 to have to
OD worked but 1st & R gear didn't [I know because I tested it out before
the previous owner removed it ot of his TR]. When I installed the NEW
TR4/A OD Mainshaft, I also installed 'NEW': 4 Syncro Rings, F&R Oil
Seals, R Main Bearing F&R Thrush Washers for the Countershaft, 2-
1st/3rd Bushings & 2nd Bushing 'Top Hat', O-rings in gear slector with
Ball Bearings 7 pins for the slector forks, & gaskests as needed. In the
OD Unit: Disassembled & Cleaned all of the 'open 1/2' of the OD, but did
NOT touch Anything in the 'back' 1/2 [clutch,Sungears, Annulus, etc].
Assembled all together & into the car with TRF's 90wt. Gear Oil. I drove
the car for about 350 miles testing out, everything [Tranny & OD] was
fine. I installed the Tranny Cover & rest of the interior. At that
point, 3rd gear started popping out of gear, AFTER I had accelerated to
driving speed & let off on the gas. Also, [about 50 miles later] when I
was on the thruway having the OD in gauged & backing off the speed from
90 MPH [Again, Just testing out the TR4/A ;-) ] to standard 55. Because
of an exit coming up, when I had slowed down to 40 MPH, I shut off the
OD, got off the thruway & accelerated up ot the 55 speed & turned on the
OD, To find out that it did NOT WORK! :-( At a later time. I & another
person checked out the OD by jacking up car on lift & running it in 3rd
gear & switching on [electrically] the OD - NO GO. Then tried manually
by pulling the lever [with hole for 3/16" rod adjustment] down to
engauge OD - AGAIN NO GO! Then about 1 1/2 later The clutch was stuck to
the flywheel & I couldn't disengage it [or so I thought]. I let the car
sit for about 2 yr. while saving-up money for the engine rebuilt
[figuring I would work on tranny when I'm ready to install rebuilt
engine back into TR], & rebuilding spair engine time. When I was ready
to pull the old engine & tranny/OD I thought that I would "give it a go"
again before removing the untis out of the car. WELL, I freed up the
stuck clutch! :-) & took it out for a quick test ride. Now, 3rd gear
still kept popping out of gear WITHOUT the tranny cover on this time :-(
, & the OD did NOT work via the electrical switch :-( . BUT the OD DID
engauge with me reaching over & pushing down this time [because I'm on
top of the OD, not under the car] the lever on the right side of the OD
Unit :-) ! So now I take it that the problem with the OD is in the
adjustment & Not the unit. IS THIS A SAFE ASSUMTION, for me to
go on? Any other input of suggestions will be WELCOMED. I have read
Nelson R.'s artical.
Now I have disassembled the Main tranny. I installed a new Detent
Spring & Plug in the 3rd gear top slector shaft unit & tightent down a
little more on the screw hopeing to tighten the adjustment. Along with
new Springs & Balls in the 3rd/4th gear synco Hub & Sleeve Ass'y. I
have NOT removed the Circlip to 3rd gear Mainshaft, YET! In past
threads, I have mentioned this 'popping out of 3rd gear' problem & have
recived different respounces. One of the reponses that I have not
followed up on was to check the condition of the 2nd gear bushing &
spacing of 1/3 bushing to this 2nd gear bushing. When I rebuilt this
tranny 4 yr. ago all was correct. Do you feel it's readly nessary to
do this again? All other parts showed no wear on them.
I've had this circlip on Back Order from TRF for about 2 months now
& have left a message with John E. of Quantum Mechanics to call with no
respounce yet. Is he out of town alot? Does any body happen to remember
the URL of 'Waterloo transmisson'? I thought that i would try him. He
use to be on this list when he was in Tx., but when he moved out to
Calif. I lost contact with him. TIA,
-Cosmo Kramer
