Was there any reference to this fluid being for aircraft?  Many small planes 
use mineral oil in the systems since high temp really isn't a problem.  
Perhaps this fluid was sold as automotive brake fluid.

Is your fluid thicker and more oily than regular fluid? I'm pretty sure 
aircraft is a bit thicker.

Most normal automotive brake fluid contains glycol ( yep same stuff as 
Ethylene Glycol in radiator fluid), try mixing a bit of the mystery fluid 
with water and see if it dissolves.  Also try a bit of regular brake fluid so 
you have a reference.
