To determine whether or not you have too much clearance in the bushings or 
gears, place the transmission in third gear, remove the trans top, grasp 
the input shaft with one hand and the universal flange with the other, and 
alternately rotate the two against each other, like you're wringing out a 
towel. Watch the gears. If they move forward and back more than a few 
thousands, the top hat bushing and / or the gears are worn. The trans will 
continue to slip out of third gear. The bushings need to be replaced.
