Ok, I think I have it figured out now. After three of the most respected
names on this list responded privately that there were not nails through the
top of the cap, I went out and cut mine off. After placing the side panel
over the lip of the cap all is well it looks right, fits fine and appears
solid.
Just for the record however, not only do I recall prying nails out of the
cap prior to recovering and have nail holes in my wooden frame, I also
checked a junk door a vender had at the Champaign show today and it had
nails as well. I still do not see how the factory could have driven them
with the foam in the way, but it seems to work perfectly well without them
:).

Same here. There were screw holes on the cockpit side of the steel
piece, but nothing through the top. I've got trim screws that go through
the door trim panel into the cockpit trim piece. It's only held there.
