Subject: Alternator or Voltage Regulator?? Help? (long as usual for me)

A week or two ago, I'm driving my 1970 TR6 (with what look to be original
electrical components) home from dinner at my sister in law's house.

As I'm motoring down the road it occurs to me that my windshield wipers look to
be going full speed . . . thinking perhaps I had flipped the switch too far, I
checked . . . NOPE! Flipped them to high speed and the almost flew off the
car.

I fiddled with a few things for a second and then pushed the clutch and revved
the engine . . . the lights got real bright and the wipers started going REAL
fast, the Ammeter was pointing real far to the positive side.

I let off the gas and let the engine idle as I coasted down the road.

When I put it in gear and started going again . .everything seemed normal.

I guess I should have investigated, because this morning on the way to work . .
. the drastic movement of the ammeter catches my eye.

"What's it doing way over there in the positive region?"

The higher I rev . . the more positive it goes.

I flipped on the heater fan and sure enough, its speed seems to be paralleling
the ammeter's movements.

I did my best to keep the revs as low as possible (which really pissed off some
of the other northern Virginia commuters) and turned on lights and fans to draw
off some of the current.

By the time I got to work . . it was ALMOST acting normal again.
Maintaining its balance between charge and discharge with only the tiniest of
twitches from the ammeter needle.

Every now and then it would hop up to the positive for a few seconds, and the
swing back to the negative for a couple of seconds. The heater fan speed
seemed to follow the ammeter's lead.

So . . . please help.
What's the deal?
Voltage regulator?
Alternator?

I don't want to melt down my wiring harness.

This is my transportation back and forth to work . . minimizing down time is
important to me.

I'd like to get a "spare" alternator anyway.
I can adapt it to the TR-4 so that both cars use the same one.

If anyone can give me the specifics on the Bosch / Fiesta alternator that is a
direct bolt in replacement, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.
Sorry for the length of this message.
