Don't get me wrong. . . I've been intimately involved with putting on a decent
sized British car show, and even a pretty good regional VTR convention. I
familiar with the ins and outs of it.
Ive worked the entry gate and the traffic direction (What better place to see
all the cars and their owners) and all the cool cars that park in the spectator
parking lots. I try and convince them to come in to the show. Ill mostly
hear excuses like My car isnt good enough to be in a show (to which I tell
them it is better than mine which is in the show) or the flat out tell me that
it is too expensive and they are only going to be there an hour or two anyway.
I can understand what they mean.
Nor do I advocate a "Driver" class.
(Although I think an elite class for previous winners is a good idea)
The point is: Charge a significant chunk of change and you are going to have a
bunch of neat cars in the parking lot instead of on the field. There's no way
around it.
How do you cover costs for the show?
How about spectator admission? (nominal charge of a buck or two)
How about corporate sponsorship?
How about setting up a Car meet with only $5 pre-registration fee?
I bet you get a TON of pre-registered cars.
People wont even worry about losing the money cause of inclement weather.
Enough to pay for some modest awards.
Speaking of awards, I dont really think you need fancy awards either.
Low pre-registration = LOTS of cars means the winners can say with pride: I
took second place in a class with 20 cars!. He wont tell you that only 6
were show cars.
Yeah Yeah . . .I know . . . there are a WHOLE lot co-dependant variables
involved in putting on a good car show (meet) but Id like to see some more
variation.
I much prefer the interactive events.
I really hoped the TCOCs Triumph Olympics would have taken off.
It could have even been made into a multi marquee event (competition anyone?)
Okay . . .Im getting off my soapbox.

Then how do you propose the host club pay for trophies, insurance,
advertising, DJs, etc, etc.? There ARE costs associated with any car
event and to expect the host club to just soak them up doesn't make
(economic) sense.
As to the concept of having a "Driver" class - I've seen it done at
some shows. Unfortunately, how does one discern a "driver" from
every other car? Often, the "driver" class is full of cars whose owners
know they can't win in their respective classes so they put them in the
"driver" class. Not fair to the daily drivers for sure, but unavoidable.
(I've seen cars entered in, let's say, the TR6 class - when a better
looking TR6 shows up, they move to the "Driver's" class...)
