Been there, done that.  I squirted just a teeny bit of WATER on one 
of mine, thinking that water ought to be about the least harmful 
thing you could use, and I could see immediately that the ink for the 
lettering started coming off.  Luckily no real harm done, though. 
Then I consulted with the list (you are MUCH smarter than I am, to 
consult the list BEFORE the fact!) and Randall Young suggested I use 
Endust
 it's like 'Pledge.'  Armed with Endust and several Q-tips, 
the gauges cleaned up pretty nicely.  I tried not to go over the 
actual lettering with the Q-tip.  Just be VERY careful!
