What I've done for bicycle cables is to crimp a (14-15 gage) spoke nipple onto the end of the cable - once the end is fixed, the part that is clamped rarely starts fraying, beyond deformation resulting from the screw clamp. If your soldering iron can get enough heat into the cable, I've also finished cables in that fashion.
