I believe if you look, you will find that 'check valve' is linked to the
piston, such that when the piston is all the way out, the valve is pulled
open to release any residual pressure in the system. As Bill noted, a bad
flex hose or a clogged line could cause residual pressure at the slave, and
similar symptoms, but if you found pressure at the MC, it almost has to be
that valve not opening.
The clutch MC on Spits, Heralds and my Sports 6 is pretty similar to the
TR4, and operationally identical to both MCs on a TR3 (which of course has
an external reservoir).
