According to Bill Piggott, some cars had the rheostat as early as TS43000
(Feb 59), but it didn't become standard until TS60001 (Oct 59). The
instrument panel is also different on cars with the rheostat, as the
rheostat takes a larger hole than the wiper and dash light switches do.
