Hugh:
Heating it and whacking aren't healthy for the crank (you don't want to
soften or crack it...). Put it in gear and/or drop the oil pan and wedge
a breaker bar between the crank and the block to stop the engine turning.
Then use a proper six point socket and a three foot breaker bar and it
should loosen without too much strain. Good luck.

few whacks. Trying to turn it with a big adjustable wrench. This isn't a
left-hand thread by chance is it? Next step I guess would be heat, but
where
to apply it? It looks like the threaded hole is behind the pulley.
Any suggestions?
