We disassembled a friends 1500 motor that made a terrible racket as he wound
through the gears. I never heard it, but he said that it sounded like a very
loud rattle. He even turned around on a Sunday drive once.
When we removed the head, relieved the springs and removed the valves, 3
showed no evidence of seating. We concluded that the valve springs had lost
tension causing the valves to float.
This made sense as I could visualize exhaust gases and intake air intermixing.
Is this what you hear?
