Dave - You hit the nail on the head. The seal itself was doing its job just
fine. The oil is leaking past the splines. I'll take your advice & after
cleaning off the residual oil, will butter up the washer & area behind the 1
1/8 " hex.

Mark, make sure the oil isn't leaking past the splines between the flange
and the pinion shaft.  Since the seal makes contact with the flange itself
there is no seal on the shaft and oil can leak out that way.  A little
non-hardening gasket sealer may do the trick.
