That's the tool to open, courtesy of Nelson Riedel!
The solution to it not happening again, is to install a backup cable, albeit
much shorter in the glove box. Any bicycle shop should be able to repair
your cable, for for $30 or whatever the cost of the cable is, I would just
replace it.
