While re threading to fine would work in a low stress app, it is not the best
choice for a high stress cyclic app. The clutch cover bolts see tension from
the cover springs and 1/2 engine torque ( there is a torque reversal when on
the power and coasting.).
If you have another flywheel use it, if not, re thread the holes to 3/8
coarse. Coarse is better for castings since cast iron and cast steel tend to
crumble when cut rather than make chips that regular steel makes. Fine
threads in castings tend to have poor thread quality.
Another choice is to use thread serts. These are steel tubes threaded inside
and out. They install using a thread 2 sizes above current size. Once wound
down, 4 keys are driven down locking them in place.
