I'm not familiar with these cars, but all voltage stabilizers have to be
grounded somehow. There's no other way for them to 'know' what the voltage
is !

Perhaps the difference is in the WAY it is grounded. Most units may ground
through the case whereas Dave got one that requires an earthing lead.
Just a guess.
