If you look closely to the thermostatic switch you will see that one port
is marked "c" for carburator and another is marked "D" for the
distributor, the other remains open. If you want to set up the engine
right, with the vacuum line disconnected from the vacuum retard diaphram
on the distributor and plugged, set the timming to 12 deg BTDC with the
accompaning high idle, maybe 1400 rpm. Reattach the vacuum line to the
distributor and recheck timming and adjust to 4 deg ATDC. Adjust idle to
800 rpm, recheck and readjust timming as necessary. As you were told in
previous emails the thermostatic valve in the upper radiator hose will
block vacumm to the retard diaphram if engine heat exceedes 220 deg which
raises the idle to the afore mentioned 1400 rpm to cool the engine. My 73
is set up as intended and runs beautiful in the stock configuration.
