I would second Dan's opinion that no harm will come of running w/o the belt long
enough to isolate the noise.  I wouldn't rely on the temp gauge during this test
as without water circulating it may be useless -- just limit the test to a 
couple
of minutes.

Know that you can probably remove the pulley with the pump on the car and if
there is interference caused by the play you describe you may be able to see
fresh grind marks on the pump body or inside the pulley.  The woodruff key & 
slot
on these can get boogered up so this could be a source of play in addition to a
loose nut.  If the pulley is held on with a self-locking nut (I believe it 
should
be) use a new one on reassembly.

FWIW -- the water pump failures I have experienced on my 3 have always been
leakers, not grinders -- so I would suspect the problem is not internal.
