If it's engine rpm related, and not drivetrain rpm related, that pretty
well takes the cv joint out of the picture. Though the input shaft
of the gearbox is still a possibility.
So I'd be investigating things like a loose flywheel or pressure plate,
bent front pulley, cockeyed belt driven accessory, bent push rod, etc.
