Yet another TED20 has joined the fold at Town Farm. We now have three
(all petrol/TVO) - all in different shades of "genuine original
Ferguson Grey." This latest arrival has seen extensive restoration by
one PO and owing to his profound ill-health, it was rescued yesterday
for a very reasonable sum. PO was ex Ferguson and confirms he did
much work in a full rebuild of the skidded unit - including the
engine.
So far, the one issue that does concern me is evidence of considerable
cavitation in the alloy thermostat top housing which feeds from the
radiator top tank. I've never seen it so bad on any engine as this one
and fortunately we have a new pattern part.
Apart from re-wiring which is hardly rocket science on a tractor of
this vintage, there's not a lot to do before it starts to do its stuff
with a period baler in about two weeks time.
My view is the engine has been run for many years on plain tap water
without an appropriate anti-freeze / coolant conditioner and I'm not
exactly busting a gut to start pulling the sleeves to have a look. Has
anyone who has stripped an old and abused wet liner engine found
similar cavitation around the liners or in any alloy parts of the
cooling system - and if so, what did you do? Put it down to experience
and leave it as it was or fit new matching pistons and liners?
