Hey guys, (and gal or two)

So this evening I'm driving up the road to show my inlaws my house that is
under construction, and on the way back it starts raining.

I keep the pedal down and we stay dry until we get to my sister in law's house.

Then there is the mad rush to put the top up.

Several hours later when it is time to go home, we find that in our haste we
forgot to turn off the head lights.

Fortunately the car started right up (thank you mr. hi torque japanese starter)

We are making our way home and as I'm explaining how I can tell the battery is
charging, I happen to touch the ammeter.

YOWZA!!
That sucker is hot as heck.

I figure the alternator is seeing just about its maxium load, with the lights
on and trying to charge up a depleted battery too.

So I know there's a lot of amps passing through those thick brown wires back
there, but I still would like to know if the excessive heat is an indication of
another problem.

It was hot.
Very hot.
You couldn't hold your finger on it for more than a second or two.

I know there's some knowledgeable electrical folks out there who can probably
help me out. (Dan Masters, please bring some of your books to VTR and I'll be
sure to buy one)
