I've only done this once (thus far). If memory serves, the secret to
threading a new harness down the tube is to stagger the bullet connector ends
and wrap the wires fairly tightly together with some electrical tape. A
couple of wraps of tape should do it; too thick a wrap and you end up with
pretty much the same problem you worked to avoid! You can bind in the string
at the same time, with the same tape. Doing this should give you a snug fit,
but nonethless a much easier time of installation without cutting off any
connectors.
At least that worked for me!
