Some the most fun I've had the last few years is helping a 40+ year old
nieghbor and his teenage son with their TR6s. The old man bought a '72
about 5 years ago. He had a TR6 right after college. He tells about
starting out on the honeymoon in it --- as I recall the "Prince of
Darkeness" got them in a thunderstorm a few miles from the church.
The son bought his '74 TR6 project a couple years ago when he was 15.
Prior to that I had given him an old engine and transmission. He and a
buddy tore both apart and reassembled them. They pulled the body on his
project and I helped them repair the frame. They then built a engine with
no help from me except for frabricating some spacers for the roller rocker
shaft. I gave them a hand with adjusting the body after it was put back on
the frame. Also many questions. The boys have really learned a lot and
it's now down to occasional help on the carbs and electrical. The son and
his friend help the dad too. Those boys are both very bright, good
students, very responsible and less impulsive than me.
I keep telling the boys that they will soon descover that women are much
more interesting than TRs. A couple weeks ago the dad sent photos of the
boys and their prom dates. Wow! My first though was "I wonder if those
girl's mothers would like a ride in a LBC". Second thought extended that to
their grandmas. I then pointed out to the boys that women were interesting
but even more expensive than LBCs.
Get very few questiions from the boys now, and most those they do ask, I
can't answer. However, I think the interest in women is perking up a bit.
The last questiion was something like: If I get married some day and it
doesn't work out, will she be able to get my TR6? Couldn't answer that one
either.
