Kirk Yonker suggested an age discount for VTR conventions to encourage
21 y.o. and younger participation in VTR, and Kai provided a long reply
asking us to actively *discourage* younger owners.

While Kai comes with a finer pedigree than me (as I have only Chevettes
and other small hatchbacks in my blood) <g> I have to respectfully
disagree. Little British cars have a long tradition as college or high school
transportation, and past and current student owners often manage to keep
their cars on the road on a shoe-string budget -- better to spend their
dollars on books and beer I suppose. Frankly, a TR4 or Spitfire is still a
great, cheap student car -- and a good starter car for a young person with
mechanical inclination. How many list members bought their first Triumph
as a used car for college? More than a few, and why shouldn't today's
students have the same chance?

While fickle youth might put some good cars at risk, I bought my TR4 from
a fickle middle-aged fellow who didn't have the stomach for an old car and
lost interest after only two years and 500 miles. And I'm all for that,
Triumph's

aren't [necessarily] a lifetime commitment, and DPO's come from all ages
and walks of life. But Triumph's are excellent cheap classic drivers and that
makes them great choices for young old-car users. Which was the point of
the Bloody Miracle memorial brick anyway.

If VTR were to recruit young owners through discounted memberships, it
would be following the lead of many special interest groups -- museums,
professional associations.... Don't know if they'll consider it, but I don't
think it's a bad idea at all.
