Gary,
One really apparent thing about magnesium is that it oxydizes like crazy.
Alloys do not have anywhere near the degree of the problem that the mags do.
Constant attention is required. Expect to spend at least several hours on
each wheel initially. And expect to do annual touchups. The only way I was
able to clean these things initially was with fine grit sandpaper. 0nce I
got them to accetable looking condition steel wool worked great for annual
touchups. The spoke color is pretty much a matter of preference. Though,
originally the wheels were all just mag colored. I painted mine black only
because it looks so good on my red TR-6 with black top and interior. The
biggest problem is the clear coat on the rim section. I've tried several
shellacs, lacquers and clear enamels but damned if I've found one that will
hold up more than a year or so. The wheels are worth the effort though. You
can not imagine the difference in handling on my 6 between the original
steels and the mags. It can only be compared to manual vs power steering.
Good luck!

Subject: TR4 magnesium wheels
Dean,
I sent an e-mail to you earlier, it may have been lost in transit. I was
curious about the TR4 magnesium wheels you were speaking of.
I have a set of 4 of these mags on my TR4. They are in need of cleaning and
painting. Realizing that mine have probably never been painted before, and
probably had little cleaning what do you recommend? I have tried the normal
mag cleaner, but the outer rim is still dull.
Also, what is the actual color the spokes should carry?
Thanks,
Gary
