Hmm. That's a fascinating description of fixing the beasty - I've never
gotten beyond step 0, which is "twist off old valve flush with head
while trying to remove".

You can block the thing off, too - remove it as best you can, put in a
pipe plug (it's the same thread as the sump), put a bolt in the end of
the hose and a hose clamp over it.

Or something like that.

Not that I've ever been in a situation where I had to do that, no, not
me, never.
