Certainly V8's have a slightly uneven sound at low revs, as do V4's

I've never lost too much sleep over the sound differences of a V8 or
straight 8. In the last year I've listened with delight to a straight
8 Triumph Dolomite, an Alfa 8C (?) a Leyland Eight (all 7.6 litres of
it) and a straight eight Packhard. Magical! In line or V, it's a
beautiful sound
IMHO tho' the greatest sound made by an internal combustion engine
comes
from the V12 aero engines which don't have a silencing system at all.
Anyone who has heard an Avro Lancaster bomber with 4 RR Merlins either
on
the ground or flying past must surely agree tht this is truly a
wonderful
sound. A formation of Spitfires or Hurricanes produces the same
result.
Amen to all that. But the sound of a sole Spitfire or Hurribird can do
things to your tear ducts if sound is allied to vision, while the
bellowing of a Lanc makes your hair stand on end. Aint no sound in the
world like a Merlin.
