There has been a lot of discussion on this list lately about engine
swaps, and it set me thinking about V8 vs. straight 6. I heard somewhere
a long time ago that a V8 was the perfectly balanced engine: 4 cylinders
each side, and with 4 strokes, opposite pistons could be doing opposite
things simultaneously, therefore being in perfect balance. Or something.
However, as someone pointed out, V8s do have a distinct rumble to them,
and a nice 6, like in my TR6 sometimes, or most new BMWs, is very
smooth. So: can someone explain it to me - which is better balanced?
