All the parts have been found, the machine work is done and the "new" parts
for my engine have arrived. I think fear is what has been causing me to put
off and put off again the reassembly of my engine. No one in my immediate
area has any experience with fitting new sleeves into a wet sleeve engine,
so I'm calling on the list for help and advice.

First, the Bentley Service Instruction Manual says (concerning fitting of
new sleeves and the figure eight joint) "It is essential that these joints
are handled and stored with great care to prevent damage to the plastic
coat." One of the new ones I received was SLIGHTLY bent when the package of
pistons, sleeves, rings, and figure eight joints was opened. I can't see
any plastic. It simply looks like a thin, flat piece of metal. They are
not expensive. Should I order a new pair and be certain that they are
"perfect?" The manual continues ..... "Before fitting, the block should be
thoroughly cleaned with a wire brush ........" My blocks (both) have been
tanked and media blasted and have been kept in plastic bags. I know I'm ok
there, it is the next part I am not clear on. "..... a light coating of
"Wellseal" jointing compound applied to both sleeves and block. Extreme
cleanliness is essential." What is "wellseal" and if it is (was) some
compound common to British engine building forty plus years ago, what would
one use today as an appropriate substitute?

This first step is crucial and if I mess up at this stage a whole lot of
time, money and effort will be wasted. Please, if anyone has experience or
particular knowledge on this or any other aspects of wet sleeve engine
assembly, I would be very happy to receive your tips and advice.

Thanks in advance. I feel confident that help is on the way.

Respectfully yours,
