A while back there was a thread about the spin-on oil filter adapter (
Moss's) being prone to leakage. I've had one for about 2 years, with no
problems. ( can you see where this is going yet?)
Last evening I left work in the 3A, heading home via a short section
of the NY Thruway.
As I pulled off the exit ramp, I noticed a bit of rpm-dependant clatter and
HOLY SH## no oil pressure!!! I scooted through the intersection while
loafing the motor, just enough to get out of traffic. A quick inspection
revealed a huge leak at the Spin on adaptor, and a very well oiled underside
of the car. Nothing visible on the stick, but the temp was normal and I had
shut the motor off voluntarily. Perhaps total disaster has been avoided?
time will tell.
After completing the trip home on the back of a flatbed ( looked
silly- there was room for at least 2 more TR's) I determined that the gasket
between the Spin on adaptor and the engine's original oil filter canister
'nest' had blown out. On closer examination, the spin on adapter had a razor
sharp edge that seemed, in some way, to have abused the O-ring. I had
changed the oil filter earlier this year, but the O-Ring has been in place
since I installed the adapter....
The adapter was tight, undamaged, and showed no obvious signs of
contributing to the event.
The O-ring supplied by Moss ( I'm pretty sure it was theirs) had a
squarish cross section, and I am wondering if I should replace this format
with a traditional round cross section Oring in Buna or Viton. The Squared
version seems a bit inappropriate for the shape of the 'nest' it lives in,
and the rather sharp edge on the spin on adaptor may have had trouble
sitting directly on top of the rubber.
SO, assuming my motor has not hammered itself into oblivion, has
anyone got a suggestion about an upgrade to this Oring, or maybe some
experience with a handful of Silicone seal/Oring/whatever? Incidentally, I
had spent 4 hours at Motor Vehicle earlier in the day,
and had successfully re-registered the car as a "Collector Car", allowing my
Inspection requirements to be reduced to merely having an operating
odometer. ( No, I am not kidding!) It was that kind of day...
Fingers crossed,
