The A type OD is a sturdy unit.

Someone on this list (who rebuilds these things) said he had a box full of
broken thrust washers from this. As a concequence, I push in the clutch
when I shift the TR3 into overdrive. I have no qualms about shifting the
TR6 (J-type) at full throttle but since the J-type has no accumulator it
shifts much more softly. The A-type on the TR3 shifts quite hard and I
fear that all the rotating inertia in the engine being forced onto the
internals of the overdrive is unecessarily stressfull. I guess I could
play with the adjustment to soften the blow. I'll put it on my mile long
To-Do list.
In Bill Piggott's book he describes the change to the J-type overdrive in
the 73 TR6. He referred to the J-type as more reliable. I do not know why
he stated that but I speculate that the softer shifting dealing less stress
on the whole drivetrain may be the reason.

71 TR6 (J-type) (Yes, that's right. But I have a 73 frame)
