I went through the exact same exercise with my TR4 several years back. And,
there were several small changes that made a WORLD of difference in the
cooling capacity of the radiator.
1. Have the radiator rodded, recored or, what I did, use a TR4 radiator (no
neck) from a later car (65+).
2. Install a 6 blade "tropical option" fan. I was fortunate to find one of
these at a reasonable price. But the yellow TR250 fan will work, as long as
you can work out any clearance issues.
3. MOST IMPORTANT: Get yourself a GENUINE SMITHS thermostat... the one that
cuts off the bypass hose when the engine warms. If you do not cut off the
bypass, the system will only be running at 70 percent capacity. When it's 98
in the sun, in traffic to the beach (opps, Colorado, sorry), you'll
appreciate the extra 30 percent. You can these from several sources... I
think XK'S Unlimited is one. You'll have to search.
Stay cool. Oh, and use the original TR4 ductwork... just spent the 30 bucks
on a new one.
