I just came across an interesting comment, part of SKF's Bearing maintenance
and replacement guide :
"Bearings with shields ... should however not be stored for more than two
years prior to use ... Such bearings are "lubricated-for-life" but the
grease will age and become too stiff if kept too long."
I wonder if this explains the apparent rash of TOB failures. It certainly
never occurred to me that they might have a limited shelf life.
