Mike, After getting the idea from this list, I advised a friend to try it rather than cutting the studs. He's a teacher so he had them made in the high school shop. 1/4" worked fine. No evidence of the nuts interfering with the wheel hub. However, I'd go to 5/16" next time since a bit of the studs still protruded beyond the nuts with the 1/4" spacers.
