Today's Wall Street Journal human interest story is about the restoration of the
Mercedes 300SL once owned by Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle's son. An interesting
article about what the WSL columnist describes as "the world of extreme car
restoration". While not exactly apples to oranges, the owner's efforts and
expense may seem familiar to some Triumph owners... and a bit insane to others.
I did like one sentence about avoiding over-restoration. "To keep things
authentic, the shop made sure to get some paint on the underside, inside the
wheel wells and on the exhaust system." With 1000 hours into the paint job, I
imagine it took 10 to 20 hours to painstakingly overspray the muffler. Shame the
fellow almost surely won't 'keep things authentic' by taking the car out for a
fast drive.
