That's normal !  You should need to back off the choke as soon as the engine
starts, the sputtering and whatnot is because it's too rich.  "A little
dab'll do ya !"

I feel it's better to drive the car right away (rather than letting it idle
to warm up), so I use just the barest amount of choke while driving the
first few blocks.  By the first stop light, it's down to just fast idle, at
the second light the knob gets pushed in all the way.  (I always double
check while I'm going up the ramp to the freeway.)
