I did determine my 74 TR6 does have a ballast for the coil, and I checked
the voltages to determine it is working. I am puzzled by something though.
When I bought the car 2 years ago, it had a very old looking coil. I dod
not recall any markings on the coil, but it was aluminum and polished up
pretty nice. On the one mounting bolt there was a small tubular electrical
device which I thought was a doide. At this point, I did not understand the
wiring at all. I think it only had one wire which may have led to the +
terminal. I looked at some close up pictures I had taken before redoing the
engine, but I could not see the wiring. When I got the engine rebuilt, they
put on a new coil, which I had bought from Moss. It is the correct one for
a 74. But the diode is now gone, and I can not find such a part in the TRF
catalog. Am I correct in assuming the PO had done some customizing, or was
this a factory arrangement?
