Well listers we done went and done it! Casper (1957 TR3) departed
the 29th of March for the 2001 River Run in Lake Havasu City. This
was to be the "shakedown" trip in preparation for the run to
Brekenridge. 1351.8 miles later on the 2nd of April he is safely
home in his garage having earned at the very least a new oil filter.
We went by way of Diamond Bar, CA for an overnight with our good
friends the Horns, arrived in Lake Havasu City on Friday, had a nice
reception, but Casper was a little uneasy around all of those MGs
(SoCal/AZ MG club sponsored the event).
Luckily four TR6s and a TR8 showed up so he felt a little better, we
did not do too well in the Funkana (AnnaBelle kept missing the cones
with the hoops) of course my driving was spectacular as usual.
Nor did we score in the Poker Rally (AnnaBelle could only get 4
diamonds an one spade) on the run home however we hooked up with two
of the TR6s following a passel of MGBs and one MGC and when the
opportunity presented itself the three of us left those wimpy MGs
smelling our exhaust for a great "let the pipes sing" run over a very
nice, fast stretch of desert hiway. I could have passed the TR6s but
I did not want to embarass them :-).
Finally at the Car Show the classes were MG this and MG that and
"Other British Sports Cars"! Casper won 2nd place, beaten by an
100-6 Austin Healey that was probably trailered in and participated
in none of the road events :-).
All in all we had a great time, the trip home from Los Angeles was an
"adventure" high desert winds on 395, bone chilling winds over the
Tehacapi Pass, and still cold in the San Joaquin Valley (50 something
is cold in an open roadster). But we made it, Zero, Zero, mechanical
difficulties (Bruce will be proud) and many, many looks from the less
fortunate in their warm sedans. AnnaBelle fulfilled her job of waving
at any and all admirably.
Press on Regardless
