Or maybe not.  According to the ancient Celtic legends about leprechauns,
they wore red clothing and were evil little people who could spring up out
of the ground.  Not the sort of hitchhiker I'd want in my car.

Perusal of the old legends and the anthropological finds suggest that the
beings who were the root cause of these legends may have been Neanderthals
who were living on the Emerald Isle when the Celts arrived.  Part of the
legends may have been inspired by the Neanderthals hiding in tunnels and
caves.  Like Neanderthals elsewhere in Europe, they eventually died out due
to the higher technology of the Celts.

Now the green-clad guy on the Lucky Charms cereal box might not be too
bad...
